The Lahore High Court, on Thursday, sought a reply from Punjab government and others on a petition seeking directions for a judicial inquiry into the laptop scheme.
Justice Muhammad Khalid Mehmood Khan passed the order on a petition filed by the petitioner-counsel Mian Shahid Abbas.
Earlier, the petitioner-counsel submitted that the Punjab government was misusing public money to promote PML-N and its political manifesto.
He submitted that a huge amount was being spent on newspaper adds and posters of the laptop scheme containing a picture of Mian Nawaz Sharif who did not hold any government office.
He contended that it was a violation of the constitution as no public money could be spent by any political party, except for the public purpose and not otherwise. The petitioner also pointed out alleged corruption in laptop scheme and contended that it caused a loss of Rs 1.7 billion to the national exchequer. “The Punjab government violated Punjab procurement Rules 2009 while awarding tenders for laptops”, he added. The petitioner pleaded the court to issue directions for a judicial inquiry into the laptop scheme. He also requested the court that the respondents be prosecuted for misusing and misappropriating public money. The court after hearing the arguments issued notice to the Punjab government and others and sought a reply. The court office will fix the next date of hearing.
