With the bilateral relations coming back on track, Pakistan is keen to have an agreement with India in the field of culture to bring the two nations closer and create markets for art. Pakistan National Council of Arts Director General Tauqeer Nasir said he had held informal discussions with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Director General Suresh K Goel about signing a cultural pact between the two nations and he was hopeful that a pact would materialise soon. “There is an MoU, which is in progress. I hope we can materialise those things. In simple terms, it is almost agreed from both sides. We want this cultural pact to be signed,” Nasir told reporters in New Dehli. He said there was a series of interactions between the two organisations four or five years ago and an MoU was planned even then. “But then things came to a halt. We will revive the programme. The motive is to increase our cultural exchange,” he said. Asked how hopeful he was, “I am optimistic. We will have something new between the two countries.”
Cultural ties have their importance but these will remain superficial until Pakistan accepts subcontinetal history as its history. Since its creation, Pakistan has unleashed all the force at its command to seek historical moorings in west asia. and denigrated its subcontinental moorings.Non existing things can not be found. I am optimistic about the cultural ties but not very sure about the end result until some space is allowed by Pakistan for its subcontinetal moorings.
