Karachi Commissioner Roshan Ali Shaikh has directed all deputy and assistant commissioners to ensure strict enforcement of Section 144 imposed by the provincial government on sheesha smoking in the city.
“Indiscriminate action should be taken against all hotels, restaurants and joints offering sheesha to the people,” said the commissioner in a meeting on Monday.
He said it is the joint responsibility of parents, teachers and the city administration to see that youth, including students, are protected from habits that are detrimental to their health and social wellbeing.
The commissioner also urged the media to realise and educate the public against hazards of sheesha smoking that are far more dangerous than other modes of smoking and tobacco consumption.
“There is an urgency to make people realise that sheesha smoking is neither fashionable nor safe,” he said. “Sheesha smoking leads to drug addition is frequently mentioned by the healthcare providers and cannot be ignored.”
