The opposition parties in the National Assembly have decided to present a joint stance based on their consensus on the recommendations forwarded by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) regarding the restoration of NATO supplies and the US-Pakistan ties.
Opposition leaders got together at the residence of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman in Lahore on Saturday for a joint meeting. Speaking to the media, Fazl said the opposition parties would try to ensure that the parliament’s resolutions were actually implemented. “The parliament will form a policy based on consensus regarding Pak-US relations,” he said. “We also need to be assured that the resolution drafted during the All Parties’ Conference should be implemented,” he added. The meeting was attended by Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Opposition Leader in the Senate Ishaq Dar, central leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Likeminded Saleem Saifullah, Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao (PPP-S) chief Aftab Sherpao, among others.
Nisar, who was talking to reporters alongside Fazl, said that it had been agreed in the joint parliamentary session that a strategy would be set based on consensus. The resolution on restoring NATO supplies should be unanimously passed by the parliament,” he added. “We will not allow the parliamentary session to be hijacked in any way,” he said. The government will have to “persuade the opposition on the parliament’s decisions,” he added.
Debate on findings: The parliament will resume its joint session on the resumption of NATO supplies and Pakistan-US ties on Monday after a five-day hiatus, following which a debate on the PCNS recommendations and findings will formally commence.
