Indian authorities on Tuesday claimed to have released Dr Khalil Chishti, the Pakistani scientist who had been languishing in an Indian prison for 19 years. Indian newspapers claimed that officials on Monday silently released Chishti and deported him back home after the Indian Supreme Court granted clemency to the 80-year-old Pakistani virologist. It is, however, unclear which route he was deported from. Chishti was undergoing life term in Ajmer jail for murder since 1992.
He had been suffering from various ailments for a long time heart disease, and left ventricular failure. He also had a hip fracture. Civil society members, journalists and former apex court judge had been pleading with the government of India to release Chishti on humanitarian grounds.
