Ruling coalition fine-tunes strategy on PCNS recommendations

The top military and civilian leadership on Tuesday discussed the government’s strategy on the recommendations submitted by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) for evolving new terms of engagements with the US in the war against terrorism.
Spokesperson for the president Senator Farhatullah Babar said the meeting was in continuation of earlier meetings held on March 14 and 17 and discussed security and foreign policy issues.
The meeting was jointly chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, while PML-Q Secretary General Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, ANP chief Asfandyar Wali Khan and Senator Afrasiab Khattak, Dr Farooq Sattar and Haider Abbas Rizvi of the MQM, Senator Mir Israrullah Zehri of BNP-Awami, chief of FATA parliamentary group Munir Khan Orakzai, Shaukat Ullah, Khuda Bux Rajar and Syed Muzzafar Hussain Shah of the PML-F and PPP’s Syed Khursheed Shah attended the meeting. Hina Rabbani Khar, Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, M Salman Faruqui, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt, ISI DG Lt-Gen Zaheerul Islam, Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani and Defence Secretary Nargis Sethi were also present. The president and the prime minister also had a separate meeting with the coalition partners.
The meeting discussed issues relating to the PCNS report that was presented in the joint session of parliament earlier in the day. The ruling coalition fine-tuned its strategy on the recommendations and a strategy of the ruling coalition was evolved about the recommendations.
