Punjab distributes Rs 2.1m among students

Punjab government distributed Rs 2.1 million worth of cash prizes in all the seven tehsils of the Rawalpindi district among the students who secured positions in the speech, essay-writing and art competitions held during November and December 2011.
Prize distribution ceremonies were held in the Rawalpindi district tehsils.
The competitions were held on the special instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif.
The prize distribution ceremony for boys was held in the Government High school DAV College Road. For girls, the ceremony was held in the Government Girls Elementary School, Khyaban-e-Sir Syed.
Provincial assembly member Zia Ullah Shah was the chief guest at both the functions.
He distributed prizes among the winning students.
Zia Ullah Shah while addressing these ceremonies said the Punjab Government was paying special attention to promoting and improving the creative capabilities of students through co-curricular activities.
He added that education is the top priority of the government and that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had taken solid steps to improve the educational facilities, raise the standards of education and to make the examination system transparent through implementing the Education Reforms Programme.
He said the Punjab government is handing out prizes to students to encourage them. He stated that the government had provided higher education scholarships to deserving students by establishing the Punjab Education Endowment Fund.
Shah said the Punjab government’s mission to bring change through education was the catalyst behind the establishment of the Danish schools for the underprivileged children in Punjab.
He added that under the programme, high quality educational facilities were provided in different phases to the children.
He said co-curricular activities like speech, essay writing and art competitions, help in improving and promoting self-confidence and creative activities among students.
Spring Festival in NUML on March 16: The National University of Modern Languages (NUML) students will welcome spring by organising a festival on March 16.
The preparations for the festival have already been started by the university students.
The Jashan-e-Baharan festival has been celebrated, since the past many years, to welcome the spring.
Jashan-e-Baharan being a colorful festival provides the opportunity to students to enjoy themselves outside of their daily routines.
Holding celebrations in the month of spring is the annual feature of the university’s extra curricular activities. The festival will be arranged by different faculty members and students.
Different stalls will be set up, including food outlets, seasonal fruit juices and song dedication stalls.
The students would also fly kites as a part of the festival.
Scientists urged to ensure management of research knowledge: Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) Social Sciences Division Member Dr Muhammad Sharif stressed upon the scientists to play their role for the management of the knowledge generated from different research and development activities.
According to press statement issued by the council, he was speaking at the Cereal Knowledge Bank (CKB) workshop at the PARC headquarters.
The CKB is the world’s leading repository of extension and training materials related to cereal and cereal production.
It was launched in January 2008 and is managed by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) as a service to people working to improve the well-being of cereal farmers and consumers.
Sharif expressed the hope that the participants of the workshop will put forward recommendations for the Pakistan Cereal Knowledge Bank and formulate a mechanism for its creation and maintenance by different stake holders for increasing the production, storage and marketing of cereals and its products in Pakistan.
Directorate of Scientific Information Director Shahnaz Zubari and IRRI consultant Dr David Shires also spoke on the occasion.
