IPO calls for copyright protection

The creation of the Collective Management Organisation (CMO) would help regulate matters related to protecting the copyrights of creators and helping the Pakistani music and film industry. This was revealed in a joint meeting on Wednesday in which music companies’ representatives and Intellectual Property Organisation (IPO), PTA, broadcasting stations officials participated.
International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) Regional Director Ang Kwee Tiang who is visiting Pakistan to examine the constitution and functioning of the CMO, was also present at the occasion.
The representatives participated in the discussion and highlighted the core issues being faced by them, specially the unauthorised use of music contents. Tiang said the concept of the CMO was introduced in France where the first CMO was established in 1777. He added that currently there are 300 CMO’s working globally. He mentioned the success stories of many CMOs that are working successfully to protect the interest of creators and performers. Administration and Human Resource Director Messaq Arif said the CMO has become a source of income for performers by evolving a balanced and mutually accepted strategy.
