KARACHI – The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Karachi police on Wednesday claimed arresting three University of Karachi (KU) students for their involvement in the cracker blast at the university.
The SIU also said that it has recovered a large quantity of weapons from the arrested men’s possession.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, DSP Ali Raza said that three suspects – Mohammad Umar alias Chhotu, Syed Fayyaz Ali and Mohammad Hafeezullah – were arrested with three TT pistols, a Kalashnikov, two hand grenades and a high-roof jeep.
The officer claimed that the suspects had confessed during interrogation to their involvement in the blast at KU.
At least four students were wounded when an improvised explosive device went off on the KU campus when students affiliated with the Imamia Students Organisation were about to offer Zuhr prayers on a lawn near the central cafeteria.
On the other hand, three KU students have been picked up from different parts of the city – Mohammad Hafeezullah, 22, was picked up from the University Road on Friday, Mohammad Umar, 21, from the Shamama Shopping Centre situated at the University Road, and Mohammad Faayez, 22, from near a mosque adjacent to his house.
Family members of the KU students told Pakistan Today that they had filed complaints at their respective police stations.
DSP Ali Raza said that the KU students were affiliated with the Waheed brothers, who were detained in the UAE for their alleged links to militants, and had used a mobile phone for the cracker blast at the university.
