Mr Justice Sagheer Ahmad Qadri of the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, on Friday sought comments from the Punjab chief minister and other respondents on a petition filed by several students of the National Defence University against the alleged discriminatory policy of the Punjab government to distribute free laptops. The petitioners, Muhammad Sajjad, Zafar Iqbal, Zulfiqar Hussain and Abdul Basit, who are studying at the NDU, Islamabad, but belong to the Punjab, contended that hundreds of students from other provinces studying in the colleges and universities of the Punjab had been declared eligible for getting free laptops, but their names had not been included in the free laptops scheme. The petitioners made the Punjab chief minister and the higher education secretary respondents.
Advocate GM Chaudhry contended before the court that as the Punjab government had not provided suitable educational facilities in Rawalpindi city at university level, hundreds of students were forced to get admission to a university located in Islamabad. He stated that the Punjab government had started the discriminatory scheme by spending public funds, depriving deserving students of the right to get laptops.
