A robber, who was shot dead by Township Police in an alleged encounter late on Saturday night near College Road, was identified as Jahanzaib, a resident of Haiderabad, Sindh on Sunday. Police had said Jahanzaib was a hardened criminal and was wanted by the police in 20 other cases of robberies registered with different police stations of the city. The police said Jahanzaib, along with his accomplices, used to engage in various street crimes, adding that he had a house in Multan that was being used as a hideout.
Earlier on Saturday, Township Police claimed that Jahanzaib had robbed a family based in Karachi of cash, jewellery and other valuables from a family based in Karachi. The police cordoned off the area and started searching for the robbers. Meanwhile Industrial Area Station House Officer Ramzan Dogar, who was patrolling the College Road, signalled two motorcyclists to stop but they exchanged fire with the police and hid in a park. When the firing stopped, Jahanzaib was found dead.
The police recovered a Blackberry mobile, cash and a bag from the robbers but his accomplices managed to escape from the scene.
Capital City Police Officer Ahmed Raza Tahir applauded the efforts of Township and Industrial Area police and recommended Pakistan Police Medal for Township SHO Rashid Ameen Butt and Industrial Area SHO Ramzan Dogar on Sunday. The CCPO also announced commendatory certificates and cash awards for the cops.
The police said no one from the heirs of deceased robber had contacted the police in order to receive the body which was placed in Jinnah Hospital morgue for autopsy. It would be important to mention here that late night on Sunday, it was observed at the crime scene that the deceased had a bullet injury in his head but surprisingly there was no blood around the body. The feet were also clean, which showed that the person had been shot dead while he was standing.
