Punjab govt approves investigation, feasibility of 18 new small dams

Punjab Irrigation Secretary Irfan Elahi said on Tuesday that the Punjab government had approved a scheme of investigation and feasibility of 18 new small dams in the Potohar area under the Annual Development Programme. He said that among these 18 small dams, Sowera dam was one of the most important projects due to its special geographical significance. He added that the dam site is located on Suraq Kas, a tributary of River Sill, which falls into River Soan, 13-kilometre West of Pindi Gheb Town, Pindi Gheb tehsil in Attock district. The irrigation secretary said that the catchment area of the dam was 32 sq km, with live storage capacity of 2,680 aft and the proposed area for irrigation through gravity flow was about 2,200 acres. He said that the tentative cost of the project was Rs 350 million, including the land cost of Rs 60 million and it will be completed by the end of 2012.
