The US is trying to lure Pakistan away from the Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project by offering cheaper gas to the country.
An article published by the International Herald Tribune says the US has stepped up efforts to lobby Pakistan to abandon not only the IP gas pipeline project, but also liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchases from its western neighbour in return for cheaper gas from US.
“The US embassy officials [in Islamabad] held a meeting with stakeholders from the [country’s] power and energy sector last Tuesday to seek input on Pakistan’s current LNG import and IP gas pipeline projects,” the paper said.
Following the meeting, a US embassy official was quoted as having told Pakistani officials that Iran’s gas would not be affordable for Pakistan.
