It was an expression of dissatisfaction over the efficiency of the federal ministers coupled with a sense of humour, when senators on Wednesday suggested having Veena Malik elected as the deputy chairman of the Upper House of parliament to attract ministers as jovial Jan Jamali failed in keeping the members in attendance through his humour.
Deputy Chairman Jan Jamali lamented the absence of the ministers from the House saying, “Bring a resolution… let us dissolve the Senate.”
Treasury Senator Kazim Khan said only the ministers should be sacked for their failure to attend the session. Senator Tahir Mashhadi said the ministers’ absence was “contempt of the House”. The remarks of the senators led PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan to come up with a solution to the problem, suggesting, “Let us bring Veena Malik from India and elect her as Senate deputy chairman to attract the ministers in the House.” Jamali responded, “Then something superior (than Veena Malik) should be elected as chairman and the prime minister.”
Jamali said he would take up the issue of ministers’ absence from the House with “his boss”, Farooq Naik.
Later, the deputy chairman expunged the remarks on Veena Malik.
Another source of irritation for the senators was “Reply not received” on the question they submitted in the Secretariat for written replies.
The replies to eight of the 11 questions on the agenda were not given by the ministries concerned. Interestingly, the ministers concerning with three questions which were replied were absent from the House. The deputy chairman referred “The National Commission for Human Rights Bill, 2011” to the House committees on Law and Human Rights after the senators proposed amendments in it to make it more suitable. The members were of the view that human rights situation in the country was dismal and required a proper legislative cover.
