ISLAMABAD – Nineteen people were arrested from Peshawar and Islamabad during Hajj for carrying drugs, a press release by narcotics control ministry on Sunday.
Three persons were given death penalties and 278 were given life imprisonments by the special courts, the statement said, adding that during 2010, Pakistan seized 4688 kg Heroin, 3784 kg Opium, 44,600 kg Acetic Anhydride (a precursor chemical used in Heroin labs) and 83,233 kg Hashish.
“Narcotics Control has successfully achieved all the targets set for the year 2010. The efforts and initiatives taken by ministry of narcotics control have been appreciated by the cabinet. The international community has also expressed their resolve to continue supporting Pakistan in combating the menace of drugs,” it said.
A briefing was given to the prime minister on February 3, 2010 and he had directed Narcotics Control Division to formulate new National Anti Narcotics Policy and announced to make Lahore as a model drug free city. An agreement was signed between narcotics control ministry and the United Nations Office on Drugs and (UNODC) for a four year Country Programme (2010-14) on June 17, 2010, supporting the ongoing initiatives in illicit trafficking and border management, criminal justice and drug demand reduction.
A five year Drug Control Master Plan (2010-14) has been prepared by Ministry of Narcotics Control in consultation with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The objectives of five years master plan include control of production and trafficking of narcotic substances.
there are millions of drug addicts in pakistan, and what goverinment is doing for there treatment… we can see millions of drug addicts walking on the streets, goverinment should have to be sincere for there proper treatment and rehiblitation….
