While the country is suffering from persistent power outages due to a circular debt of hundreds of billions of rupees, only a few are paying electricity bills in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Sources in the Tribal Areas Electricity Supply Company (TESCO) told that the federal government provides an annual power subsidy of Rs 102 billion to FATA.
They said that Rs 17 billion still remained in outstanding bills against domestic consumers in the tribal belt. Sources said that 92 percent of the tribal people do not pay electricity bills, and when their connection is cut off, they take up arms and forcibly get the supply line restored. Officials added that government departments in the tribal belt had Rs 920 million against them in outstanding dues.
