The Higher Education Commission (HEC) PhD Review Committee on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) Shariah and Law Department’s performance, as it failed to attract students. The committee’s meeting was held at the IIUI with HEC Adviser Dr Riaz Hussian Qureshi in the chair. According to sources, the committee took serious notice of the declining numbers of students in the department. Sources said that the varsity administration requested the committee that the GRE Test was the main hurdle for intending Shariah students. Every year, hundreds of students from seminaries applied for admission in the department but could not pass the GRE Test.
The IIUI administration said that in the GRE Test, ‘irrelevant questions’ were being asked. On this, the committee directed IIUI high-ups to coordinate with the National Testing Service (NTS) management for conducting the GRE Test in accordance with department requirements. The committee was also told that PhD Environment Science was also suspended. Earlier, the IIUI started the programme without complete faculty. The committee directed the IIUI president to recruit complete faculty before restarting the programme.
