The Lahore High Court on Friday adjourned till January 18 a petition challenging the appointment of Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran as the Punjab University acting vice chancellor after his retirement as VC on January 2.
Justice Sheikh Ahmad Farooq was hearing the petition filed by Dr Mughees-ud-Din, a candidate for the slot of VC, who had impleaded the Higher Education Commission secretary, the principal secretary to the chief minister and others as respondents.
During hearing of the case on Friday, PU Acting VC Dr Mujahid Kamran appeared before the court and sought time to file his reply on the matter.
The court, accepting his request, adjourned the hearing till January 18. The petitioner pleaded that Dr Mujahid Kamran’s contract had expired on January 2, 2012 and law did not allow his extension in service or charge as acting VC of the varsity. The petitioner pleaded before the court to set aside the notification that allowed Dr Mujahid to continue as acting VC of the university.
The VC was appointed for a period of four years according to the Section 14 of the PU Act, the petitioner said, contending that neither an extension could be granted to the VC nor could he be allowed to serve as a stopgap arrangement.
