Following the orders of the Supreme Court, the Sindh Election Commission on Tuesday convened a meeting with representatives of the transgender community at the commission’s provincial head office in Karachi to ensure that the names of their community members are entered in the voters list ahead of the upcoming elections.
Leaders of the transgender community would be asked whether they want their names to be entered in the ‘male’ column or the ‘female’ column, as many community members have female names, while others have male names.
The apex court had ordered the government to ensure that the names of the members of the transgender community are entered in the voters list, as this would prove beneficial for them to acquire proper jobs.
Provincial Election Commissioner-Sindh Sono Khan Baloch had contacted Shemale Foundation President Almas Boby, Gender Interactive Alliance President Bindiya Rana and other representatives of the transgender community to attend a high-level meeting at the Sindh election commission’s office.
Sources said that three aspects would be covered in the meeting – ensuring registration of the names of the transgender community members, verifying their addresses and their preferred place for vote-casting, and asking them for their preferred gender (‘male’ or ‘female’) column in the list.
If the community’s representatives would like to provide suggestions of their own, they would be encouraged to do so, added the sources.
The meeting would be attended by the Sindh election commissioner, Election Commission-Islamabad joint secretary, and Social Welfare secretary and director.
