They came, they robbed and they left. It took them just three minutes to empty all cash counters, pockets and purses,” a could-be victim of a robbery in a Gourmet Bakery outlet at Umer Chowk, Syed Kamal Bukhari tells Pakistan Today.
Though the robbers are still to be caught and the police are still to justify the increasing number of robberies in the city, despite the notice taken by the Punjab inspector general of police, a robbery incident in and of itself seems the end of the world to a victim.
“Our lives were worth an Rs 8 bullet, no more,” Bukhari said.
“I went to Gourmet that day to get doughnuts for my daughter’s school party. All of a sudden, I heard a salesman shouting and warning everyone that robbers were holding the security guard and were about to enter the bakery,” he said, adding “Immediately I gathered that the best place to hide would be behind the counter. Meanwhile two robbers in masks entered the vicinity. They looked young, were wearing jeans and t-shirts and were carrying light
weapons. A third one was deputed on the gate.”
