Pakistan Young Doctors Association (YDA) warned the government not to force them to use their right to protest, and to hold a fair enquiry into the mismanagement of King Edward Medical University’s (KEMU) affairs. YDA announced that it would meet in person with the Punjab chief minister (CM) to apprise him about the issue. In a press release issued from Pakistan YDA, the office bearers of the association said they had informed the Health secretary in writing about their reservations regarding affairs of KEMU and had demanded the appointment of a regular vice-chancellor (VC) in KEMU, and a regular principal in KEMC, on the basis of seniority.
The acting VC was holding five offices: firstly, KEMU pro-VC, secondly, KEMU VC; thirdly, Punjab Institute of Preventive Ophthalmology (PIPO) director general/principal; fourthly, Mayo Hospital professor of eye and fifth, as the prevention of blindness national coordinator, the release quoted YDA President Dr Rana Sohail and YDA Chairman Dr Talha Sherwani. Calling it a matter of great concern, they added that a regular VC had not been appointed at the institution for the past one and half year.
The release added the ongoing construction of a multi-storeyed building inside the campus was in violation of the report issued in 1960, and the current administration was trying to congest the campus’ environment. The new construction would prove fatal – not only for the campus, but also for the adjacent locality of Anarkali, as the sewerage system of the area would be choked with the new building’s waste, YDA claimed.
YDA also demanded an enquiry of machinery worth Rs 25 lac stolen from PIPO in KEMU.
