Vegetable prices shoot up in capital

The prices of vegetables have gone up at the city’s Sunday bazaars when compared with the previous week. This Sunday, the prices of tomato had jumped by Rs 10 per kg to Rs 54, while it was available at Rs 44 per kg. The prices of other vegetables also witnessed increase, however, onion witnessed significant decrease with Rs 16 slide in the per kilogramme price. According to price lists at the Sunday bazaars, the per kg price of onion was Rs 42 per kg against Rs 58 last week. Market pundits were of the view that onion was earlier imported from Afghanistan but the local produce had also started reaching the markets. They predicted that the prices of onion would witness further decline in coming days. According to the market players, the price of tomatoes, currently being imported from India, would remain high till January next year.
This week the prices potato, gourd, pumpkin, brinjal, cauliflower, cucumber and ladyfinger also witnessed increase. Potatoes were sold at Rs 24 per kg which was Rs 20 per kg last week while gourd was available at Rs 50 per kg against the last week’s price of Rs 30. Similarly, the price of ladyfinger also witnessed an increase of Rs 20 per kg, as it shot up to Rs 60 against the last Sunday’s price Rs 40 per kg.
However, this week, the prices of other vegetables including ginger, garlic and peas remained stable while green chilli witnessed slight decrease, as it was sold at Rs 60 per kg against the market rate of Rs 80 last week. This Sunday lemon was not available at the weekly bazaars due to shortage in the wholesale market. According to rate lists, this week the prices of chicken also witnessed a slight increase, which reached Rs 110 against the last week’s price of Rs 107 per kg. In fruits, the prices of apples (golden) witnessed an increase of Rs 10 against the last week’s price of Rs 100 per kg. Orange and banana were sold at the per dozen price of Rs 70 and Rs 50 respectively.
