Canadian show jumper Eric Lamaze is considering retiring following the sudden death this week of Hickstead the horse he rode to 2008 Olympic gold, he said Wednesday. “I think that he was the best horse in history,” Lamaze, still visibly distraught over Hickstead’s death on Sunday, told a press conference in Toronto.
“And maybe there won’t be another one like him.” The horse, which was ridden by Lamaze on his way to Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008, collapsed at the Verona International Horse Show and was pronounced dead at the scene. Tim Danson, Lamaze’s lawyer and friend said the 15-year-old Dutch stallion had succumbed to a ruptured aorta.
