ISLAMABAD – A two-member Supreme Court bench on Wednesday directed the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (PEPA) to submit a comprehensive report on the environmental hazards in Choa Saiden Shah.
The bench of Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa was hearing petition filed by around 0.25 million inhabitants of Choa Saiden Shah through their counsel Sajid Mehmood Sheikh against environmental hazards in the area.
Mehmood told the court that 1.5 lac gallons of water was being pumped out by Lafraj Pakistan Cement, Bestways Cement, DG Khan Co and Nishat Papers Product Company Ltd each day from the area, resulting in the drying up of natural springs in Katas, Waan and Khoshi.
He said factory waste was contaminating underground water and spreading diseases.
