LONDON – Former president Pervez Musharraf has said that he is not responsible for the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and former Balochistan governor Akbar Bugti, and cleared his position that he will not appear before any inquiry commission in this regard.
In an interview with a private TV channel, the former president said that it was not his responsibility to provide security to the late Pakistan People’s Party chairperson. “I was head of the state, and a government was in place that time. Providing security was responsibility of the security agencies, and this obligation was discharged befittingly,” he added.
Benazir Bhutto spent over two hours inside the Liaquat Bagh, and then she addressed the public meeting, he said, and added that she was provided full security. When the public meeting was concluded she was provided bullet proof vehicle, pointed out. He said he saluted security agencies and security personnel who provided protection to the late prime minister at the cost of their lives.
“Those alleging me should tell who had asked Benazir Bhutto to come out of the car,” he questioned, and said that how could security agencies be blamed in this case. Benazir Bhutto opened sunroof of the vehicle herself, therefore the security agencies were not at fault, he maintained. “I want to make it clear security agencies were not at fault in the murder,” he said.
Musharraf also termed the allegation levelled against him being responsible for the killing of Akbar Bugti as baseless, and said that the former governor was fighting against the security forces in the mountains of Balochistan. It was responsibility of the FC to protect the country, he said. Bugti was killed during his clash with the security agencies, he remarked.
