Lahore – Today, we are observing the third anniversary of such a great and patriotic leader whose leadership qualities, vision and courage is recognized worldwide.
Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto not only symbolized a moderate and liberal Pakistan, she represented the politics of federation. She shared a unique bond with the people of Pakistan as she devoted her life to the struggle for their right to political representation, constitutional liberties and a just social order.
In international circles, she was always seen as a larger than life figure, and an outstanding public intellectual, yet for her people, she was their sister who mingled with them at every given opportunity, shared their hardships, owned their sorrows and was committed to their future. In return, people showered their unconditional love and devotion to their faith in her to steer the country out of the crisis brought upon by series of non-representative rulers.
Shaheed Mohtarma’s final act of her commitment towards democracy and love for the people of Pakistan cost her life when she was assassinated in a bomb and gun attack after leading a historic election rally in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007.
Her demise was a terrible blow to her people and the party. However, it should be described as the success of her political struggle that instead of pushing the country to the brink of a collapse, her death proved to be turning point for the nation, as they decided to close the doors on the forces that have continuously sought to undermine their aspirations for a progressive order.
She lived with the people and died with the people. Inspired by the vision and ideals set by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, the democratic leadership of coalition government and the ministry of sports have taken special initiatives for the promotion and revival of sports in the country.
