Following the example set by their juniors, students of Intermediate Part-II took to the streets in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sargodha and Dera Ghazi Khan on Tuesday demanding that the government cancel their results.
In Rawalpindi, a large number of students of various colleges affiliated with BISE Rawalpindi staged a demonstration against board authorities for announcing ‘faulty’ Intermediate Part II results.
Angry students, a majority from Government Asghar Mall College and Gordon College marched on Benazir Bhutto Road (BBR), carrying bamboo sticks in their hands. They gathered outside the BISE office at 6th Road and torched tyres. The students raised slogans against the RBISE chairman and the Punjab government for announcing faulty results.
The protesting students said the RBISE’s negligence had put the future of hundreds of students at stake. They demanded the RBISE chairman cancel the Intermediate Part II result as they had been failed in subjects in which they had attempted their papers well.
Gordon College student Ali Asghar said, “There are cases where arts students were passed in science subjects.” RBISE Chairman Dr Qasim assured students that their papers would be rechecked. After his assurance, the protesting students dispersed peacefully.
Talking to Pakistan Today, RBISE spokesman Arsalan Cheema said after the Punjab government’s decision that all Intermediate Part-I papers will be rechecked in 45 days, students of Intermediate Part-II could also submit applications for rechecking, which would be completed within 10 days.
In Lahore, students protesting outside the BISE office told Pakistan Today they had come to the board office for rechecking of their papers but the officials were not cooperating with them.
“Government officials only listen to you if you force them to listen,” said an angry student, as he and several others protested against the BISE staff. He said the board officials had not learnt a lesson from the cancellation of Part I result.
The demonstrators dispersed after the chairpersons of the boards concerned including RBISE, Sargodha Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, and Lahore BISE promised to cancel the results and recheck the papers.
