A judicial magistrate on Monday sentenced a National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM) senior officer to jail on remand for killing a student in a road accident. Waseem Iqbal, a senior official at NESCOM, was arrested on Saturday night. The Secretariat police on Monday presented him before the judicial magistrate, who sent him on judicial remand for 14 days. Zaheer Lakho, a student of Masters in mathematics, was hit by a car allegedly driven by Iqbal on Saturday while he was walking along the road on the footpath near QuaideAzam University (QAU). The injured student expired in the hospital. The students present at the time of the incident had grabbed Waseem and handed him over to Secretariat police but later police officials had allowed him to go. Following his release, hundreds of students staged protests at Bari Imam Road and besieged a police station.
Succumbing to the students’ pressure, the police registered First Information Reports (FIRs) against Iqbal, and his friends Ismail, Said Rasool, Naveed and Sajid who had helped Waseem and against two police officials who had allegedly helped the accused in escaping.
The other arrested accused were sent to jail on Sunday. However, the main accused who was arrested late Sunday was presented before the judicial magistrate on Monday, who sent him to jail.
