The Finance Ministry on Tuesday asked the Ministry of Water and Power to influence the Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) and ask it to recover its outstanding dues and clear its payments with the Pakistan State Oil (PSO) for uninterrupted fuel supplies.
The Water and Power minister met Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh to discuss power shortfall and fuel supplies to independent power producers (IPPs).
Electricity shortfall in the country worsened because fuel supplies to IPPs were cut, and less water was being released from Tarbela and Mangla dams on the instructions of the Indus River System Authority.
PEPCO says the current power shortfall stands at 2280 megawatts, as 12675 MW of electricity is being produced against a demand of 14500 MW.
However with Rs 11 billion sanctioned by the Finance Division to PEPCO, power generation has been raised to over 14955 MW and the imbalance has been brought under 1000 megawatts.
