The masses and supporters of the Pakistan People’s Party will strongly resist attempts to derail the democratic set-up in the country, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Monday. Addressing a press conference, he took strong exception to the statements made by the leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) about rallies to dislodge government at the Centre.
“This may actually backfire as the people of the country support the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which is under the able leadership of its co-chairperson, Asif Ali Zardari,” he said. He urged the opponents to connect themselves with the ground reality and stop day dreaming as democracy was fast gaining firm roots in the country.
“President Zardari is the biggest proponent of democracy and has voluntarily handed over authority to the parliament,” said Memon.
He said that the PPP government has been democratically elected and would complete its five-year tenure as guaranteed under the constitution. “The PPP has come into power on basis of tremendous sacrifices and did not choose its entry through back-doors as done by different opposition parties in the past. “Anti-democratic and anti-PPP elements must also well understand that a system is also being introduced under which no fake vote could be caste in the next national polls.”
He said that the PML-N leaders are visiting Sindh as part of their photo sessions and cannot fool anyone by exaggerating the distribution of goods among the flood-affected people. “They can neither deceive, nor play with people’s emotions.” The minister said that decision about the local government system in the province would be made in accordance with the wishes of the public.
