PIA pays more in rent than leased Greek planes’ worth

LAHORE – The Pakistan International Airline (PIA) has procured two planes on lease after grounding two Boeing-747s, a private TV channel reported on Sunday. The revelation is a new scam in the national flag carrier, which has now leased 25-year old Greek planes for a whopping rent of $7.5 million for 1,000 hours after grounding its two jumbos. Sources said the PIA got these planes from Hellenic Imperial Airways along with the crew, adding that the two 747s had been grounded on account of engine faults.
Reportedly, the aircraft had been grounded for possible skimping on routine check-ups and overhauls. The irony in this case is that the rent paid by PIA to the Greek company is more than the worth of the chartered 25-year-old planes. Sources said the Civil Aviation Authority has denied one of the chartered planes the permission to fly. A PIA spokesman said that six aircraft had been grounded – three for routine overhauling while three others for technical faults. Monitoring Desk

  1. The officers from PIA had a lead role in the start of Emirates Air Lines. Had it not been for the political interferences and corruption PIA would have been amongst the greatest airlines of the world. Extremely saddened to read this news.
