Estranged husband kills cop guarding his ex-wife

A policeman was killed while another cop and a woman were seriously injured when a man opened gunfire on his ex-wife and policemen in the Sector-I/10-2. The incident took place in the Sabzi Mandi police precincts.
Arshad Mehmood, the station house officer (SHO) of the Sabzi Mandi Police Station, told this scribe that Sub Inspector Muhamamd Raiz was killed and constable Ashraf and a woman named Gulshan Bibi were injured when Masood Elahi, the accused ex-husband of the woman, fired shots at them.
Mehmood said the Masood and Gulshan, after a divorce, had been having child custody row over their son and the woman had sought police security after receiving threats from her husband.
On Friday she, escorted by the policemen, came to the Islamabad Model College for Boys to get her son’s certificate when Masood Elahi attacked her with a firearm. He said their son was living with his mother for the last few days after a court’s verdict.
It was learnt that school’s principal, Noor Elahi, had sought Masood’s opinion over issuance of the migration certificate.
The SHO said the accused who was reportedly a CDA employee was already present near the college premises along with his associates.
He said they had a row and when the policemen tried to intervene, Masood Elahi fired shots killing policeman Raiz on the spot and injuring Ashraf and his wife Gulshan.
The injured were shifted to Pakistan Instituted of Medical Sciences (PIMS). Elahi fled from the scene of crime after the incident.
The funeral prayers for the deceased policeman were held at Police Lines Headquarters where Islamabad IGP Bani Amin Khan, AIG (Operations) Sultan Azam Temuri, DIG (Headquarters) Ahmed Mukaram, SSP Headquarters Zubair Ahmed Hashmi were present to pay their final respects. Then the body of the deceased was sent to his native village Bhera.
The IGP said the Islamabad police was proud of his officers and jawans who had sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. He said the Islamabad police was committed to ensure protection for citizens. He said though there could not be any compensation for a lost life, the police department would, however, support the family of the deceased cop and provide job to his son or a close relative.
