In a major development, the Punjab Police Department was exempted from the Punjab Employees Efficiency and Disciplinary Act (PEEDA), 2006 by the provincial cabinet on Thursday, Pakistan Today has learnt. Per details, the police department had separate disciplinary action rules for the force, just like other institutions such as FIA and army, however, after the PEEDA police officers were brought under this act like other civil servants.
Sources in the government revealed that the police inspector general has been “dissatisfied” with the arrangement and wanted a separate disciplinary action procedure for the force. “The inquiry officer takes 60 days under the PEEDA, while the inquiry dates are further extended to a period that the official concerned cannot be proceeded against…there are other lacunae as well due to which the IG initiated the proposal to exempt the police department from PEEDA,” the source added. They further revealed that the cabinet has exempted the police department on a temporary basis, while a new act will be introduced for the police department very soon.
Moreover, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif presided over the cabinet meeting at the Civil Secretariat and gave approval to different amendment and draft bills including Ghazi University Dera Ghazi Khan Act 2011, amendments in the Punjab Local Government Ordinance, draft bill of Punjab Environmental Protection (Amendment) Act, 2011 and the bill titled “The Punjab Motor Vehicle Transaction Agents Act, 2010”. The meeting also approved the recommendations regarding
appointment of the members of Punjab Public Service Commission.
