The prices of vegetables and fruits remained the same while the price of chicken decreased in Sunday bazaars of the city. The price of chicken has been decreasing for the last three weeks and the trend continued this week as well. There was a slight increase in the prices of some fruits and vegetables but overall the prices remained the same.
City District Government Lahore (CDGL) fined a number of shopkeepers for overcharging and selling substandard goods. The city administration collected Rs 2,000 from shopkeepers for overcharging after inspecting four Sunday bazaars. The prices of garlic, spinach, cucumber, ladyfinger and carrot decreased while the prices of potatoes, onion, tomatoes, peas, lemon and green chilies increased. In fruits, the prices of apples, grapes and pomegranate increased while the prices of bananas decreased.
A large number of customers was seen because it was the first Sunday of the month. A majority of people got their salaries and that increased the number of shoppers at the bazaars. However, the consumers complained about the quality of fruits and vegetables and said that the CDGL was not very concerned about the standard of goods. “Often the vegetables are rotten and we complained to the administration but nobody is bothered about it,” said a customer Khawar Akhlaq at Green Town Sunday Bazaar.
The CDGL inspection team inspected four Sunday bazaars including Wahdat Road, Moon Market Iqbal Town, Sheera Kot and Gulshan Ravi. The team managed to collect Rs 2,000 as fine from a few vendors, who were found guilty for overcharging or poor-standard products. “The city administration should take stern measures against profiteers if it wants to help people,” said a housewife Samia Faisal.
The price of chicken decreased by Rs 4 per kilogramme (kg) and it was sold for Rs 151 per kg. The customers welcomed the reduction and said it would ease their problems. “It had become almost impossible for people to eat chicken due to high prices in the past few months when the price was Rs 240 per kg. At least one can eat chicken once again,” said a customer Raheel.
