A sessions court on Friday granted bail to Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) labour union leader Akhlaq Ahmed and 29 others in a case pertaining to an alleged attack on the head office of power utility.
The KESC CBA chairman and other officer-bearers of the power utility’s labour union had moved a bail application through their counsels, Haq Nawaz Talpur and Kamran Ali.
After hearing both sides, Additional District and Sessions Judge (South) Shahid Hussain Chandio granted bail against a surety of Rs 30,000 each.
According to the prosecution, the suspects staged a protest demonstration against non-payment of salaries at the head office of power utility on Aug 29, 2011, during which they attacked police, ransacked KESC property and torched vehicles including a police van.
Initially their case was heard before the administrative judge of the anti-terrorism courts. Later, it was sent to a regular court after the administrative judge observed that the offence did not attract the Anti-Terrorism Act. Two cases were lodged against the suspects at the Defence police station.
