One person was killed and 18 injured Thursday in a crash involving three trains outside the Venezuelan capital, officials said.
Transport Minister Francisco Garces told state television that a train leaving the capital suffered a mechanical failure and was hit from behind in the Valles del Tuy area.
The collision pushed one of the trains into another travelling in the opposite direction along an adjacent track.
One of the train drivers was killed, according to Deputy Justice Minister Nestor Reverol.
Garces initially said that 30 people had been injured, but later revised down the toll to 18.
The train link between Caracas and nearby areas was opened in 2006. Officials said the service would be suspended for cleanup operations.
