The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) will set up 4,000 temporary learning centres in the rain-affected areas of the province to provide hygiene and health awareness education to 200,000 students and ensure that students continue their normal schooling.
This was decided in a meeting between provincial Senior Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq and UNICEF representative in Pakistan Dan Rohrnann. On the directives of the minister, provincial Education Secretary Muhammad Siddiq Memon held a meeting with UNICEF education specialists Shahla Rasid-ud-Din and Sony Spencer.
It was decided that under the temporary learning centres programme the Education Department will provide teachers and UNICEF will train them. The temporary learning centres programme will also train students about child protection. On the occasion, the education secretary nominated Additional Education Secretary Ashfaq Ahmed Qadri as the focal person to monitor the programme.
