Punjab Industrial Estates Development and Management Company (PIEDMC) has completed preliminary study to install the country’s first 50MW coal power generation plant at Sundar Industrial Estate, Lahore. The proposed power plant will generate cheaper electricity even below WAPDA tariffs. PIEDMC Chairman SM Tavneer disclosed that the board of directors had constituted a power committee under PIEDMC, which look after all power related projects. The committee had already initiated the process of obtaining license from National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to roll out the first ever coal fired power generation project.
He was addressing members of Lahore Economic Journalists Association (LEJA) here on Thursday. He indicated that though the proposed project was at initial stage, but preliminary estimates suggest that the average electricity generation cost from this power plant would be around Rs8-9 per unit. He pointed out that the proposed power plant would be installed through public private partnership, which would be a self-sustained project. Estimates suggest that power generation through imported coal would be more economical than local coal available in the country.
He pointed out that imported coal had higher efficiency, however, power experts and consultants would made final decision. Tanveer said to ensure uninterrupted power supply to industries in the Sundar Industrial Estate (SIE), the extension work of 132KVA grid station of PIEDMC was underway that would add an additional 34MW in the industrial estate system.
A wise decision is taken by Punjab Industrial Estates. It should be also taken for other Industrial Estates in Lahore.
