Causing illegal breaches or cuts in the channels and distributaries is a non-bailable offence and the culprits could be awarded up to two years imprisonment and fined up to Rs 5,000 penalty, stated the Sindh Irrigation Department on Saturday.
According to the department, breaches and cuts are caused in distributaries and channels by local landlords and growers in the province to drain the accumulated rainwater from their agricultural lands. This is illegal and would leave negative effects on the downstream and infrastructure, said a statement.
The landlords and growers found involved in creating breaches or cuts would be held for committing non-bailable offence under sections 61, 62 and 62-B of the Sindh Irrigation Act, it was stated. The culprits could be awarded up to two years imprisonment and fined up to Rs 5,000, the statement added.
