The deadlock between Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) remains to be broken despite a series of meetings at the Governor’s House, Pakistan Today has learnt. On Friday, former federal law minister Senator Babar Awan called on Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad but the meeting bore no fruit. As the head of the presidential committee to persuade MQM to join the government, Awan has become increasingly active in talks with the MQM that are going on behind the scene.
Despite telephonic contacts between MQM chief Altaf Hussain and PPP co-chairman President Asif Zardari and positive statements of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani regarding government’s relations with the MQM, things on the outside seem to be stuck as no other MQM members have attended the meeting with PPP central leaders. Insiders told Pakistan Today that after Dr Zulfiqar Mirza tirade of accusations against the MQM, the PPP has changed its stance and it has become difficult to accept all conditions put up by the MQM.
“The emerging situation is not favorable for the MQM as it cannot press on its agenda and points of agreement and conditions,” they said. Both parties are not playing on the same ground as the level and points have changed for both but now the PPP leadership is not ready to accept all conditions of MQM. While both parties are ‘hopeful’ and ‘friendly’ with each other but behind the scenes ‘all is not well’ between them as the meeting on Friday also could not bring about a mentionable breakthrough.
The reason for the deadlock between the PPP and MQM, if not broken until now. will most probably continue. The Supreme Court has reserved its judgement and the verdict or court order is due to be released. The judges are not that naive not to know who was exactly behind 12th May massacre and target killings in Karachi.
Dr Zulfiqar Mirza has exposed Altaf Hussain and his party in a way no one else could even think of. To direct criticism against the chief of MQM requires a courage. The result of Zulfiqar Mirza's allegations was that media also grasped a new-found freedom. However, MQM's strong arm activities against journalists continued and the whole world witnessed dismissal of Nusrat Javeed of Bolta Pakistan by the management of AAJ TV on the orders of MQM militant wing which Hyder Abbas Rizvi vehemently denied. Assuming MQM did not pressurise the TV channel then one can only assume that such is the fear instilled in the press that the management itself had to act so as not invite the wrath of this terrorist party.
MQM had Rehman Malik as its main ally but since recently Babar Awan has joined and you would have noticed that both these leaders, in collusion with everlasting governor of Sindh, connive against the interest of Sindhis.
