Nine people, including six women and a minor, were electrocuted and over two dozens injured in various incidents reported across the city as heavy downpour lashed the metropolis on Saturday, paralysing communication and power supply network as more than 100 feeders of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) tripped off the system.
Five women died in the same incident while trying to save each other from getting electrocuted. Hospital sources and volunteers of Edhi and Chhipa ambulance services said three unidentified people, including a child and woman died on the spot when a live wire fell on them in Choona Bhatti area. Two young men, Arif and Naveed, were electrocuted in Haroonabad SITE Town while a woman, Anisa, was electrocuted in Kharadar area of the old city.
At least 26 motorcyclists received minor injuries as they slipped off their bikes in various parts of the city. An official of the Met Office said its Landhi observatory recorded 52 millimeters of rain during a one-hour spell, while Faisal Base received 31mm of rain, Nazimabad 25mm and Airport 18mm. More rain was expected in the next 24 hours, he added.
