In order to mark the International Literacy Day, National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) in collaboration with UNESCO and some NGOs working in education sector on Thursday organized walks to highlight the plight of illiterate people in the Pakistan.
Dozens of children, students of federal educational institutions and civil society workers participated in the NCHD walk. Participants were holding placards and banners inscribed with slogans to raise literacy in Pakistan. They marched from China Chowk to D-Chowk.
The participants of the walk were of the views that literacy was necessary for peace in Pakistan. This year the theme of International Literacy Day is “Literacy for Peace”. The NCHD organized walk was led by its chairperson, Dr Nafisa Shah MNA.
Speaking on the occasion, she said that inequalities, stigmatisation and discrimination linked to wealth, gender, ethnicity, language and location were the curses of illiteracy. There were currently some 759 million illiterate youths in the world and the most unfortunate news was the major portion of these illiterates was dwelling on East Asian part of the planet.
PCE observes International Literacy Day: The Pakistan Coalition for Education (PCE), an initiative of the Society for Access to Quality Education (SAQE) observed the International Literacy Day on Thursday.
The PEC flagged a reminder on the implementation of the right to education ensured by the constitution under 18th amendment through Article 25-A, said a press statement issued here.It said Pakistan had the lowest literacy rate in the world and it was among countries with lowest spending on education.
It said, “The Pakistan Coalition for Education (PCE) observed the day and emphasised on the implementation of Article 25 A- Right to Education.”
