Navy ready to defend boxing title

LAHORE: Pakistan Navy will defend their boxing title in the 31st National Games at Amaan Ullah boxing stadium, Peshawar. The Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) has announced the schedule for the competition. The event will start from December 26 and end on the 30th. Olympian referee judge Ali Akber Shah Qadri has been appointed the technical delegate while AIBA Three Star referee judge Ghulam Hussain Patni will look after the event as chairman jury. Dr. Amjad Rahim will act as an official doctor.
The weighing-in of boxers will be held early in the morning on December 26 at Amaan Ullah Boxing Stadium. Managers’ and technical officials’ meetings would be held in the morning and the first session of boxing will start at 3:30 pm. The PBF has decided to introduce Swiss timing scoring machines to avoid controversial draws. Waheed Maqsood will be the head of this system and will make computerized draws. Twelve teams are taking part in the boxing event, including defending champions Navy, Army, Air Force, WAPDA, Railway, Police, HEC, Islamabad, Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab and host province KP.
Around one hundred boxers will be seen in action in the 10 body weight categories of 49kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg, 91kg and 91 plus kilogram. Pakistan Police will be making their debut in the boxing event of the 31st National Games, Pakistan Boxing federation (PBF) announced on Monday.
APP adds: The members of the executive committee of Pakistan Olympic Association on Monday assured their fullest support to the organising committee of the 31st National Games scheduled to be held here from Dec25 to 31. The commitment and support was shown in their meeting with the President of Pakistan Olympic Association Lt. Gen (Retd) Syed Arif Hassan.
Besides Lt. Gen Arif Hassan, the meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Ghulam Dastagir, Provincial Minister for Sports and Patron of the Games Syed Aqil Shah, Secretary POA Khaliq Khan and members of the Pakistan Army, PAF, Navy, Pakistan Wapda, Pakistan Police, Pakistan Railways, HEC, Sindh, Balochistan, Islamabad, AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan, FATA and hosts Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.The meeting expressed satisfaction over the arrangements made for the foolproof security of the players, officials and technical officials at all the venues and their accommodation areas.
Aqil Shah told the meeting he was encouraged with the support extended by all the law enforcing agencies including the Army and the words of support by Corps Commander Lt. Gen Asif Yasin Malik.
He also highlighted the steps taken for the security besides the provision of security to the teams. He disclosed that all entry points to the Qayyum Sports Complex will be on cards.The players would be provided shuttle service from their accommodation places and there would be separate VIP car parking at a distance of five minutes walk as no vehicles would be allowed to the Qayyum Sports Complex.
He told the meeting that Secretary POA Khaliq Khan visited the accommodation of the players and officials in the Cantonment area where he was briefed about the steps taken for the players’ security.
Chief Secretary Ghulam Dastagir on this occasion told the meeting that the organising committee has taken the situation as a challenge. He said that not only the police but all the law enforcing agencies have been taken on board while Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti is monitoring day to day developments in order to ensure full security to the players during the games.
