Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly said that the current devastating floods in Sindh have inflicted colossal losses to the people and economy of the province especially District Badin.
According to a press release, Dr. Fehmida Mirza appealed to international donors, business community and affluent people to come forward and help flood victims of Badin. She said this during her visit to the Zero Point, Shadi Large, Khoski and Navy chak settlements in the vicinity of Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) in District Badin.
She said that the current floods were unprecedented in the history of Badin inundating 90% percent of the district and displacing more than 18 million people. She said that crops in the entire district have been washed away causing a major blow to the livelihoods of the people who were already living below the poverty line.
She said that the affected people were also at high risk of water borne and contagious diseases. She said that the LBOD was a perpetual nuisance for the Badin district and the current devastation was due to inherent fault in its design.
She said that the government was fully aware of the sufferings of the people and was trying to address them; however, support of international community and other segments of society would help a lot in mitigating the sufferings of the people. She appealed for provision of tents, clothing, food items, water and medicines.
She said that government has also been requested to start helicopter service to airlift stranded people.
Dr. Fehmida Mirza also met the effectees in the relief camps established for the people evacuated from effected areas and assured them of her all-out support. She also inspected the Medical camps and the medical facilities being provided to the people. She asked the doctors to extend round the clock medical healthcare to the flood affected people.
