DUBAI: Former president Pervez Musharraf said on Saturday the Chaudhrys were never against him, saying they had deviated off-course under political expediencies, but would be reverting back to his fold at an “opportune moment”.
He also denied that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Fazlur Rehman was against him, saying Fazl was in constant touch with him.
Talking to a private TV channel, Musharraf stressed it was the Chaudhrys who “pressurised him” to quash cases against Benazir Bhutto and promulgate the National Reconciliation Ordinance.
He said former ISI chief Gen (r) Hameed Gul wanted to become the prime minister, but turned against him (Musharraf) when he was refused the opportunity.
The former president said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman was the politician with the best character, and had only turned against him (Musharraf) for being refused the promised seats in 2002 elections.
