ISLAMABAD: Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao on Sunday strongly voiced China’s support to Pakistan’s perspective on the war against terrorism, saying terrorism must not be linked to any particular religion or ethnic group.
“There should be no double standards in this regard. Steps should be taken to address the real reasons that lead to terrorism. China will stand by Pakistan to confront all challenges, bring peace and stability to the region, and to turn a new page in Pakistan-China relations,” the Chinese premier said while addressing a specially-convened joint session of parliament. Wen became the first Chinese and sixth world dignitary to address the parliament’s joint sitting. He started his speech by greeting the parliamentarians with “Asalam-o-Alaikum”. Amidst massive desk-thumping by the enthusiastic members of the parliament, Wen said China and Pakistan were all-weather strategic partners and shared the sorrows and joys of each other.
He said Pakistan was passing through a difficult phase as it was facing many challenges and problems, adding however that he was confident that the government and the people of Pakistan were determined to tackle those. “The government and the people of Pakistan are united and moving forward to safeguard the solidarity, prosperity and sovereignty of the country. The Chinese government and people will firmly stand by you to face all challenges together,” he stressed.
“China’s stance is clear and consistent. China stands by Pakistan and it will continue to enhance interaction with Pakistan in all spheres. The people of Pakistan have neither been influenced by anyone in the past, nor will they be, in future,” he said. The Chinese premier assured Pakistan that China would assist Pakistan in rebuilding the infrastructure damaged due to the devastating floods.
