PESHAWAR – Federally Administrative Tribal Areas (FATA) community schools teachers staged a protest rally in Peshawar on Saturday against the government’s bid to close community schools in FATA.
More than one hundred teachers from Khyber Agency gathered in front of FATA Secretariat on Warsak Road and chanted slogans against the closure of community schools. Teachers Association President Aman Ullah Afridi said that closing down of 950 community schools was an unwise decision that would not only leave 1500 teachers jobless but also deprive 100,000 children of education.
He said that it was a wrong perception that these schools were non functional, adding that some of these schools were more active than regular schools and the government must give a second thought to this unwise decision. After 9/11, the government with help of foreign donors established the community schools in all over FATA in 2003.
