Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Friday started fumigation of the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) to ensure proper hygiene and sterilisation. “The hospital makes its best efforts to provide quality medical care to all patients, and fumigation is a scientific method which provides a hygienic, sterilised and micro-organism-free environment in the hospital, especially in the ICU,” according to a press statement.
“Fumigation is an on-going activity which is carried out at regular intervals. To ensure sterilization, the PIMS executive director has decided to carry out a fumigation drive of the hospital’s ICU,” the statement added. Since the fumigation has started from the medical ICU, alternative arrangements for the patients of this ICU have been made in the surgical ICU, temporarily reducing the capacity of the surgical ICU for surgical patients. All heads of departments were asked to follow certain guidelines, for example, planning elective procedures according to the prevailing situation and arranging high-dependency areas in their wards during the fumigation process.
During the fumigation, swab analysis and other measures would be taken for the protection of staff working in the ICU, whereas the infection control committee of PIMS would oversee the fumigation process, the statement said.
