The Sindh Rangers have been given authority to exercise exceptional powers in the violence-stricken city of Karachi, a private TV channel reported on Thursday. The Sindh Home Ministry had issued a notification announcing the decision, the channel said. The Rangers have been given the authority to shoot-on-sight any miscreant, conduct search without warrants, finish no-go areas and take stern action against assassins and extortionists.
Meanwhile in Islamabad, President Asif Ali Zardari urged the provincial government to take stern action against all extortionists and criminals in Karachi in an across-the-board action that must be regardless of political affiliations. The president passed these directions in a late night meeting with Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan at the Presidency.
President Zardari said that all political forces and the general public had to come forward and complement the provincial government’s efforts to restore peace in the city.

  1. THE Rangers, as I understand,. were given the orders to shoot on sight any law breaker in the past but that was for cosmetic reasons. The government now appears to be somewhat serious and I sincerely hope that the ongoing operation, if that really is, should not be compromised for political expediency because peace is the cry of the city and the people will be forthcoming to support the government if there are concrete results.

The Rangers if respond within minutes of the terrorists resorting to violence and take on them then the situation will rapid ly return to normalcy. Let us see what developments take place in the coming days.

  2. He should be kept away from Karachi for a while until whatever operation is underway. If he is in Karachi first thing he will do is to pass the information on to the den of terrorists, i,e,, Governor's house.
