LAHORE – While Wikileaks founder Julian Assange may have been the most controversial personality of 2010, but his website’s revelations have created ‘leaks fever’ in Pakistan, as more than a dozen Internet domains containing the word leaks have been registered in the last 30 days, Pakistan Today has learnt.
Domain registration data showed that a number of Internet domains have been registered between August 14 and December 12 including pakistanleaks.com, pakistanleaks.org, pakistanleaks.info, pakistanileaks.com, pakleaks.com, pakleaks.net, pakleaks.org, pakileaks.com, pakileaks.net, pakileaks.org and others.
These domains might reveal something astonishing about Pakistan in the coming days, as most of them were registered with US and European domain registrars. A study conducted by Pakistan Today revealed that most of the domain owners had provided fake information during registration to avoid the risk of prosecution.
Another interesting aspect of the study revealed that all these domain names were still available for registration with local domain registrar PKNIC. One could easily register a domain name containing the word ‘leak’ with .pk suffix.
Talking to Pakistan Today, a network administrator working in a leading Internet Service Provider (ISP) said that laws were not as strong in Pakistan when compared to the West. He believed that Assange’s followers preferred foreign domain registrars for their domains.
